Straddling Worlds:
An Interactive Workshop for Multi-heritage/White presenting BIPOC

 “Not brown enough, not white enough – navigating this complex racialized terrain often with no road map…”

This workshop provides a space for White presenting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) to explore the fullness of our identities without having to compartmentalize our “Whiteness” or “otherness.”  A time to honor unseen parts, which can be misinterpreted or minimized by others. Also a time to investigate the way Whiteness informs us so we can be more empowered to dismantle it.

*Politicized language like “BIPOC” plays an important role in culture. Yet, it also creates societal barriers as people are made to “fit” into a racialized system. This is especially true if you are light-skinned bi-racial or multi-heritage. If you have questions about whether this workshop is for you, please reach out!


In this workshop we will:

  • Share stories and build solidarity.
  • Explore cultural origins and investigate their influences. 
  • Grow awareness of how white supremacy lives in us to
    be more empowered to dismantle it and work towards racial justice. 
  • Honor our experiences of racial oppression.

We carry a specific awareness as multi-heritage people in the United States – along with an inherent sense of responsibility. Many of us understand racial oppression (either firsthand or historically from our families of origin) and yet we also carry white-skinned privilege. We navigate many worlds and share a common challenge in finding a true sense of belonging. Perhaps finding ourselves straddling worlds, traveling between them, and often navigating racialized terrains with no road map.  

Through inquiry, deep listening and connecting with our individual and collective experiences we will support one another in our journeys as White presenting multi-heritage people. We will draw on interactive, engaging, self-reflective and even playful approaches including Applied Theatre techniques to honor all the worlds we inhabit.

MEET THE FACILITATORS:

Daniela and Zhaleh draw on lived experience as multi-heritage, White presenting BIPOC womxn who understand first hand the complexities of straddling many worlds and the responsibilities that go with it. They are attuned facilitators, dynamic educators, and long-time activists and artists who maintain ongoing practices of self inquiry and anti-oppression study.
