Seniors/Elders Project 2006 |
The Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble’s main focus in the spring
of 2006 was our Seniors/Elders project, "The Wisdom Keepers"
-- a series of 1 1/2-hour theatre performance / dialogues on what
is like to grow older in today’s society. The project consisted
of six interactive events in Port Townsend, WA. Five of these events
were at local senior residences / assisted living facilities specifically
oriented for elder residents, their families, and caregivers to share
stories of life past and present, discuss current joys and struggles,
as well as thoughts of the future. The project then culminated in
a 2-hour performance open to the general public with a focus on how
all people can be better allies with elders in our community. The
intention was to create a dialogue between seniors and rest of the
community – in part, as a bridge between elders and youngers.
One elder participate at a recent senior performance said,
“It was good to realize that I wasn’t
alone – that others share some of the same struggles I do.”
After that same performance, another elder participant said simply,
“Thank you. That helped me a lot.”
This entire project was made possible by a generous donation from
Kert Peterson in the name of Mabel Harrison as well as the support
of New Old Time Chautauqua. (Mr. Peterson is a resident of Austin,
Texas and past participant in several Mandala Center workshops and
trainings.) All Seniors/Elders performances were free with no charge
to residences or audience members. |

“ Getting
old is a state of mind. At 72, my body might be going but my mind
is still the same as when I was 20!”
“I want to know what young people think
of us.”
“We want you to know that we are still
alive! Take us seriously!” |
